I haven't stayed in Chueca but I thought the location of the Thompson Madrid was perfect. You can easily walk to all major attractions in the city center, and you are very close to (lively!) bars & restaurants. That area is very crowded and touristy at night though. For a first time visit I would stay at the Thompson because of it's central location which makes everything walkable.
I emailed the hotel. They say it might be open in September, depending on weather. Didn't sound too promising.
Nice, Thompson does look like a great central location.
