What’s odd about this strategy is they are artificially making the fares high for PDX but not HNL. If DL decides to ax the PDX-HND Flight, they could easily re-accommodate anyone who booked the non-stop via SEA instead. If DL cuts HNL-HND on the other hand, they will essentially have to refund everyone unless the pax are willing to take a long detour via the mainland.
Doesn't their COC allow them to force the refund option if the provide ~14 days notice of the cancellation? If not, I'm sure they endorse to other carriers.
