I have done the exercise on the last trip that I did starting in BUD. The routing yielded me a 31,408. Under the new rules I would be getting 10,021. This is on the face of it a reduction of a third. However I paid a fraction as it was issued in and started in BUD and ended in MAD. As I pay my own fares (and that of my husband) The savings were £3000 or so each. Which do I prefer? A load of Avios which I have difficulty utilising for the routes that I would like (Spain, parts of the USA, Caribbean), or a huge reduction in my travel budget. I now mostly use them to position from where my itinerary starts as I tend to return to MAD as we can fly direct to Nantes with Iberia. However try getting a CE ticket to or from ALC or VLC at short notice and it is like often highly complicated. I am aware that this place is dedicated to maximising points but what good does that do if you cannot spend them? I suspect that the majority of people affected are people who are paid for by their companies but who pocket the Avios that accrue. They probably use them for going on holiday or leisure trips at weekends etc. I can imagine that they are most put out.

So commiserations for those of you affected, but for me that fact that the Tier Points have not been touched in this move is far more important.
Thanks for this, which confirms my understanding and also my experience of Avios earning and (attempts to) spend…
