That's some of the history of why AA 1MM is only low-tier whereas United 1MM is mid-tier. UA was always (or at least as long as I've been a member) flown miles.
Actually, when they merged with Continental, they did a one-time true-up of UA MM balances to count EQM instead of BIS (because that was the CO OnePass way of counting). After the true-up they continued with BIS for everyone. I got enough MM-qualifying miles from EQM I had earned on partners (or through DEQM promos) that MM status suddenly became a viable goal).
This switch from Hyatt to Marriott might actually make Marriott LT Plat a viable proposition for me (still will take a few years… but it would be nice to have one fewer status “hamster wheel” going forward.
