IME the value varies greatly, sometimes Avios Hotels are much more expensive than booking direct (or though somewhere like booking.com), sometimes it's slightly more, so you have to weigh up the price difference vs extra avios, sometimes they're basically the same, and sometimes Avios hotels is even slightly cheaper, I've never seen it be significantly cheaper though.
Bizarrely it's not really advertised at all by BA, you have to find the link buried in the 'collecting avios' section of the website, but it's worth checking their prices when booking a hotel, I've used it a couple of times and nicely topped up my avios balance, but it's by no means the best option 100% of the time.
