I can see how frustrating this is.

But at the same time it is quite clear (specially with checked luggage involved) they need to make a cut somewhere. Another thing is that if they do have people on standby it is almost a no-brainer. Perhaps if your seat were not given to someone else (and you had only carry-on) they would’ve been able to put you back again.
