CX was also a better airline in the past. Every post-COVID review of them is pretty awful, so UA actually has some ground to compete now. Sure maybe CX will reinvent itself, but seems on par with most mainland Chinese or US carriers currently.
Capacity from CX and North America-HKG market as a whole is still down. CX only has 18 weekly LAX-HKG (compared to 21 weekly pre-COVID), YVR and YYZ are still not up to 14 weekly each, and a slew of US destinations still not restarted. AA has not resumed DFW-HKG, AC is unable to resume YYZ-HKG.
Though not clear how much feed LAX gets and of course, if they're relying on O&D traffic then probably not going to win against CX in the long run.
