Given what people have said before about the AA desk sometimes requiring that the first long haul flight be on their code, I'm a little worried about this one since there is no AA code share for TYO-HNL (at least that I can see on EF). If they balk and HUCA doesn't help, what is the 2nd best way to book these things?
There are many mixed reports of AA and how they require their codes to ticket it, but it looks to me that if you do AA codes HNL-LAX-CUN then you should be able to get them to ticket it. The issue I think you may run into is they may insist on having BOS-MAD on an AA code which will complicate your journey to BA status. You'll get far more Avios if after October on an AA code, but won't count for your 4x required segments.
