I admit I now buy first when I truly want first, but this is annoying nonetheless that even getting an upgrade on an RJ for an EP is difficult. I've resigned myself to never getting an upgrade on popular routes, but RJs used to be near guaranteed upgrades.
As another datapoint: RJ flight tomorrow (in 27 hours) is showing six revenue seats per EF. No upgrade (yet) as an EP, yet the app is more than willing to sell me an upgrade for $54. AA has definitely changed the algorithm here as this is a flight, especially one showing C5 J6 R6 D6 (and C5 upgrade seats), where I'd have been upgraded easily at the 100 hour window.
