I am here at the property now, doing a 2 night stay. I am a lowly Plat, tried applying my SNA but did not clear. Upon check in, got upgraded to a junior suite - still have separate living room - so quite happy. Hotel grounds footprint is kinda small - but overall very nice hotel, I would say. Our go-to is the HR Kyoto (old but excellent omotenashi IMO), but The Mitsui, with reasonable (for Marriott) point rate, and considering how they handle upgrade - might be tempted to make this our option 1b. Lots of high rollers staying here I think. The valet lot this morning has a Bentayga, 3 Rolls sedan and a Red 488 Pista - stunning line up.

I realize that Kyoto has RC (too high of point rates for us), PH (hoarding our Hyatt points too much) and Four Seasons (expensive), and they may all beat The Mitsui, but overall, I think this is a great Marriott property, and good representation of the Luxury Collection brand. We stayed at 2 different LC properties - and each one is architecturally stunning in its own way (Matild Palace, and here).

I do want to try The Suiran. That one looks really amazing.
