Scarce 10 years ago, buying an intra-EU return from my then-local airport for 500-600 EUR was entirely normal. Now the normal price is 200-300. Literally half.
The problem is that you no longer have the option to pay more and get a good service. Race to the bottom is somewhat understandable in economy class, but it also affects business class. You can buy a return business ticket within Europe for 1000 euros (not uncommon with LH) and the experience will still be significantly worse than what you got in economy for those 500-600 euros years ago.
