Just did this with a relative who uses a walker. They managed to bring it all the way from checkin at LHR through the lounge and then to the gate and on to the plane where the crew kindly put it away for them on board in CW somewhere. One caveat: when going through security I managed the walker for them (would have been quite difficult on their own) and when being pushed by an airport wheelchair attendent I took the walker because the helper couldn’t both push the wheelchair they were providing and also carry the walker.

On the way back from BOS I believe they kept the walker with them and did the same thing in reverse. I’m sure you could do something similar at IAD.
