How is DL policing this? I done with UA , AS, and often with Southwest but I don't think I have with DL. Admittedly, the fare break usually ends up costing me more (cost of doing business) but I suppose there are situations where one might save a few bucks.
It's not a question of policing; if you search multi-city DL will only display and make available options with a time in the middle city at least long enough for a stopover (4h01 or longer domestically). I don't think they care about doing it on separate tickets and if you legitimately want to visit the destination I don't see an issue.
It's normal for a fare break to be more expensive than a connection, but sometimes it's not.
