I am traveling intercontinentally with two family members on the same flight with exact same fare classes. I am the only one with a status (1K). Would the agent at check in grant the third free checked bag to my family members being my companions?

I received conflicting information from the chat and calling the 1K line. The chat agent told me yes this is fine as long as we're on the same flight and the agent at the counter can extend the benefit. The 1K phone line agent said no everyone has to be on the same itinerary.

Any experience with this?
