If LH won't let you OLCI, you would have to check in with an agent at the airport. AC will only let you CI for their segment.

yes, second flight (to Canada on LH) is in 19 hours.

one PNR all the way. yes, checking-in 24 hours ahead of the first flight was what i was expecting but LH check-in sends me to the AC site.
like i said, not a huge deal, just puzzling. i was just hoping that someone here had a way around this.
[edit to add:] i had forgotten about this thread and it didn't come up with the search terms that i used. i now see that this is a common occurrence and there doesn't seem to be a solution other than checking in at the airport.
