Has anyone tried using the combination of SmartEX and IC cards to buy and use shinkansen tickets? Apparently, it's quite possible to do so, but I am not in Japan now and I cannot verify this. Based on what I can see online, it looks like you somehow "save" the shinkansen ticket you purchased with SmartEx to your IC card and you merely tap your IC card (Suica or Pasmo) when you go through the shinkansen turnstiles. If you've actually successfully done this, please let me know. And, if there are any tips or hints to make it easier to do this, I'm all ears. Thanks!
