Small delays can quickly cascade, particularly at an airport as busy as LHR, so I am in favour of having a cut-off somewhere! It makes sense to have it before security for ease of rebooking.
Yes passengers obviously held up even though their luggage had time to be transferred aircraft to aircraft. Sort re enforces my point about dedicated staff assisting passengers on tight connections. Not only could they get them to front of security it would also provide knowledge to quickest routing for passengers in unfamiliar airports. I also failed to mention that the firth re-booked flight was late even though it arrived into LHR 90 mins before departure and everyone was at the gate and boarded 10 mins before departure.
