I actually closed out my Amex cards a year ago because the service every time I called in was terrible, and the cards didn't actually offer me anything (rewards or otherwise) that I couldn't get somewhere else.
It's really rather shocking that they still have a reputation as being a high-end, service-oriented brand. No joke, Discover has far better customer service than Amex (no dig at Discover - they're legitimately good; it's just that they often get dismissed out of hand).
Yes this happened to me in December 2022 before the credit conditions were even tighter like we are seeing now. I have multiple products with AMEX and long-term history and never missed a payment. I missed it by 1 day since I just signed up for the Gold card, forgot to set up autopay, and was traveling to Asia the day and day before my payment was due and I forgot to pay until I saw the email. I paid 1 day late but they would not waive the interest. After multiple calls, the most I got was the late fee waived.
But in addition to not waiving the interest, OP will find they will have another round of interest due in the next statement due to residual interest.
