If you have more than one companion on your PNR then upgrades are not requested for anyone, including yourself, as the system doesn't know which companion you'd like to upgrade.

Now if the companion you want to upgrade is on a different PNR, and there are more than 1 pax on that PNR, then AA would need to split that PNR as well, so the companion you want to upgrade is now on their own PNR.
