Those who mention boarding early to ensure overhead space are typically those who are assigned seats in the first couple of rows, that’s where there are sometimes issues.
Given the extra space available in the CE cabin it makes sense that CE passengers should not be selected to gate check bags. There’s usually plenty space for all CE carry on bags.
That may be so, that that is not at all what we nor ally read here. The usual regular message is that people are forced to board early with group 1 even though they'd rather not because they feel so anxious about overhead space. And it is certainly not only those in the first couple of rows. The only other member who seems to have managed to do the maths on number of seats vs overhead space is CWS.
It's interesting that only now the obvious response to that has been brought up -, that gate checking might be necessary -, suddenly there's actually oodles of space. So either people are getting all worked up for nothing, or just not being honest about why they board early, which seems an odd thing to be dishonest about! Or are people really that worried about their baggage being 2 rows behind them? Strange the things people let themselves get anxious about and spoil their day.
I should also note that I've never had a problem finding overhead space down the back.
