We always fare better by transferring MRs to whatever program is offering the best redemption for our destinations (mostly U.S. origin trans Pacific). We wait until we're ready and let a tool like point.me do the hard work of picking the right program based upon current transfer bonuses.

Virgin Atlantic and Flying Blue often beat Skymiles for MR value. We only transfer right before booking.
