For domestic short-hauls this is not such a big deal, but if there is some sort of universal IRROPS rule that AA follows, for an international long-haul flight the difference may become somewhat relevant.

With few exceptions all AA marketed flights should credit by fare. However we have seen a number of cases recently whereby otherwise "normal" AA flights are crediting by distance for whatever the reason. One poster below received a response from AAdvantage Customer Service that the glitch was being caused by the ticket number.
So if you have a flight that should credit by fare but posts by distance, call AAdvantage Customer Service and they can get it corrected. But in your case, if you actually received more miles crediting by distance, I'd just leave it alone.
