Mérida is a lovely city. But I doubt that's high on the list, especially from the West Coast. Tourists want Cancún, flights to CUN are generally cheaper, and if you really want to get to Mérida, you can take a bus from CUN and it's not that long of a ride.

Just out of curiosity, do people on the West Coast do beach trips to Cancún? I would think they'd be more likely to go to the resorts on Mexico's Pacific coast, but then again I've never really thought about it.
