Not that long ago I had a (revenue) 261 downgrade claim which was a little convoluted (DXB-LHR-MIA in F) - LHR-MIA cancelled - rebooked onto AA flight in F next day by BA. AA flight cancelled and booked into J (downgrade) on later BA flight. BA paid delay compensation. AA gave me a $1000 voucher (without asking) - asked AA for 75% - they said BA's fault. BA said AA's fault. In the end they worked it out under some JV agreement and BA refunded the downgrade compensation to original form of payment. AA then cancelled the $1000 voucher customer service gesture.

So maybe they can work out the AA miles refund. Since OP is EXP - I would, after the flight - reach out to the executive liaison desk or whatever the C level gatekeepers are called. I would also argue that the flight as flown would have been 40K miles and ask for 22.5K back since you only bought the 22.5K extra J ticket for the better class of service...
Might make it easier for them to settle for 75% of it...
Sounds like a plan. Will reach out to the EP desk once done with travel to have it taken care of. Very much appreciate everyone’s help.

Side note: I go to check in my wife and kids tonight on the previously discussed BA leg for tomorrow and for some reason it’ll only let me check in me and my wife, not the kids. They have to be done at the airport. Of course, their new Y seats aren’t even in the record anymore. It’s like April Fools day or candid camera over here.
