Whilst this is often true on widebodies, on the 737's that the OP was asking about you do have a window (albeit often with a shade that may not be as good as a normal window), and the exit doesn't intrude on the seat at all. The real disadvantage of a window exit row on these aircraft is that you often don't have a full arm-rest on the window side, and as others have stated is can be a little cooler then elsewhere in the cabin.
