The fine print limits "engagement" to something that generates miles.

yes, that's how this works. That's pretty much ALWAYS been the way it works if airline miles or some other retailer points have an expiration to their program without activity.
logging in and viewing your account or updating an email address or preference doesn't restart the clock.
