Yeah I had an ORD-PBI A319 flight two winters ago that when Jacksonville got closed off due to thunderstorms over the Georgia Florida border, our pilot and dispatcher got us rerouted flying almost due south over MSY and then over the gulf to get around the N/S ZJX flow restriction and a lengthy EDTC delay. Like you said that isn't going to be feasible for every flight.
nice in theory, this line extended to the NW corner of LA out past NC into the atlantic. to route east (presuming the storms are not past radar coverage) the aircraft would also probably need to be over water equipped.
