"Home" and "Home Improvement" are totally different categories.

The Aeroplan site page the top-most category that applies, and the Exceptions are categories within those top-most categories that are excluded. Inclusions and exclusions work both ways. i.e. in this deal, "Home" is excluded but one of its sub-categories "Furniture" is included, so, anything under "Furniture" will get you points but anything under "Bed & Linen" will not.
