I've arrived on a plane with no luggage previously. It was the last flight of the day to my destination and unfortunately all my bedding, etc was in my bags that didn't arrive. At least I had a change of clothes in my carryon, but it was quite uncomfortable sleeping on a bare plastic mattress that night. The pilots definitely knew there were no bags, they just didn't say anything while we were on the plane because they couldn't do anything about it.
