If you're locked-in to Delta, it may or may not be less doing it that way.
But pricing from NYC airports can often find some unusual options. Of course returning from VCE adds yet another element to the options.
As I posted upthread, fares are about $600 - $700 cheaper out of NYC. If you want to be tricky (hidden city ticketing), you can potentially route the return through ATL which will still qualify for NYC fares.
