I can’t think of a single public (government run) school system in the US where geography isn’t part of the school curriculum.

Big countries’ publics may be less interested in world geography on the other side of the planet than small countries’ publics, but ignorance about such matters is wide spread regardless of educational system and shows up in various ways.
