The widebody fleet was already stretched way too thin this summer, as demonstrated by the regular YYZ-YVR cancellations every morning and the huge delays for flights between YYZ and secondary European markets every evening. One less aircraft in service is going to be a big problem.
Yes... anything can be repaired. But from what I see, there is structural damage to the rear ⅓ par of the aircraft. Let's say AC wants to invest in a 16+ year old plane. It would need 6+ months to fix. Can they find a used plane and retrofit for the same cost? Perhaps.
But either way, as I said, and as you said... 1 less 77W for the summer period.
