I've even been pleasantly surprised on a few occasions when the agents agreed with what I wanted to do -- e.g., triple connecting to get to my destination in time to make important business events rather than waiting for the inevitable rolling delay to make my existing itinerary unworkable.
I would agree. Either the ExPlat line or Admirals Club (OP was at a regional airport, so not an option) can work wonders. There have been times where the system showed I would make my connection, but we were sitting on the tarmac waiting for an open gate. I called the ExPlat line from my seat and told them the situation. They understood that the system was not operating in real time and I was, and I was rebooked. I’ve had Admirals Club folks double book me to be sure I got home. I fly out of MCO, so lots of thunderstorm issues. I honestly can’t complain.
