I'm not defending AC. I don't know why they do what they do. But I do know it's not uncommon to see a flight cancellation replaced by another flight with a four digit flight number departing at the same time.
I don’t know whether this is the reason they do this, but in the case of a downgauge isn’t an advantage that passengers bumped to a later flight are treated as mere cancellations rather than IDB?
