I'm not defending AC. I don't know why they do what they do. But I do know it's not uncommon to see a flight cancellation replaced by another flight with a four digit flight number departing at the same time.
Don't typically see that on other carriers. When they change the operating aircraft, they tend to leave the flight number the same.
Happened today on YYZ-YVR:
Most airlines only change the flight number if the flight is delayed into next day, to avoid having two flights with the exact same flight number on the same day. Sometime this update isn’t even visible to passengers.
I still don’t know when AC change the flight number to 2xxx, or just use the exact same flight number. Also some of the 2xxx flights are ferry flight with no passenger.
