Soup and appetizer isn't the issue, as not many pax have both... The problem is the late night dining menu on post-midnight departures. They fully cater for breakfast, you can have eggs until they come out of your ears, but they never have enough of the late night dishes
The only times in 10 years that I've not gotten my first choice has been on those late night flights. One particularly occasion pre-pandemic, I remember asking sequentially for *every single dish* on the menu (do you have the soup, the salad, the rice/protein, the cheeseboard, etc), and the FA politely said "none left" to every single thing in turn - so I had no choice but have (continental) breakfast at 1am. And it's even worse from outstations where you can't pre-order and the lounges don't cater a substantial meal beforehand
No idea who's in charge of catering for QR, but surely they've noticed this pattern by now...
[To be fair, QR is not the only culprit - it's been a few years, but my one and only (paid) EK F experience, I didn't get my first choice on any sector, and there was basically nothing substantial to eat leaving KUL at 2am - aka 7pm London time]
