This whole pick a single item change is def detracting from QR’s promised “a la carte” menu. Honestly, they should just advertise meals as “dine anytime” with a few options to choose from, rather than the current set up since they obviously can’t execute what they promise (and what was the former QR J meal experience)
Where are you sat on both flights? Towards the back of the J cabin? I’ve personally had 4 flights in the past 2 months where I had both soup & app - never had any issues even on full flights. Not sure if yours was a one off or if FA is just trying to conserve some options for other PAX or catering loaded fewer items than expected.
