It's not a rumour, it's confirmed that the route is ending - at least for now in mid October 2023 with no future flights planned after that. It's unusual for a route of this sort to be terminated, but equally it may come back at some point. BA has stopped services to OAK and FLL but this was due to the routes' only existence being an attempt to inhibit Norwegian.

But as you say, SFO is very close by, and with AA's network it is relatively easy to route people to other services, in some cases with a connection.
