Why would someone have to call a specific number for an airline to actually get service? When I call the US toll free numbers for BA or VS during UK hours, my call gets routed to their UK call centers, pretty obvious by the accent on every single phone agent.
Some serious stockholm syndrome going on in this thread. I can't imagine normalizing broken processes so deeply that I think people behaving rationally and normally are somehow doing something wrong.
Not all phone systems are created equal. If you want the best service from NH or JL, call Japan. Similarly, if you want the best service from Austrian or Lufthansa, call Vienna or Germany respectively. If I want the best service from AA or UA I call the US numbers. There is nothing wrong with calling local numbers if that is all the pax is capable of doing. The system accommodates a lot of those kind of people. In fact, the majority I bet. Being a step ahead is more or less what this board is all about though, so I thought I'd suggest a strategy that has proven to work more often than not. If people prefer to struggle with long wait times and translated communications, so be it. I however take a smoother road. Good luck and happy travels. :-)
