As Gold you still get lounge access, unless "we" means more than 2. If you are a larger group you could try submitting meal and drinks, or paid for lounge access, BA may pay that. You will get Cancel EC261 and you should get Mennens on the downgrade - see the main EC261 thread for the details on that.
Thanks CWS! I didn't even realise I was due EC261, I was just assuming maybe a refund. So I can get two sets of comp, one for the cancel and one for the downgrade? There's quite a lot of reading in the other thread, is it ok to go ahead and fly and then sort out all the compensation stuff when I get back at my leisure?

Yes I think indirect is not practical and the only other option would have to gone tonight but that's too short notice with hotels etc even if there was compensation. So I've gone for the 1045 which will arrive 4hr 40 mins later than the original flight.
