I got caught up in this. My return on 4 Sept was affected. The only option they could offer is connecting through ORD, making the trip 22 hours instead of the booked 12. Even going through LAX wasn't an option because it's nearly sold out, and I assume they're leaving those seats for those last minute high fare reservations.
Finally got this taken care of. The CSR took a little convincing, but in the end I got the best option. So, when they cancelled AY33 on me, they left the flight ARN-HEL on the reservation. When the CSR looked to book me an alternate flight, they were looking to get me HEL-SEA. Those options were limited to the ORD connection. Once the CSR understood they could remove the ARN-HEL flight and instead search ARN-SEA, the ARN-LHR-SEA option became available. Now I have a 15.5 hour travel time, instead of the 22+ hours going ARN-HEL-ORD-SEA.
One thing of note. This was my first experience with AY Customer Service. They are helpful, but their Finnish shows through. If you're expecting unbridled glee because they get to talk with you, you're going to come away disappointed. They're curt and to the point. Once I realized that, my frustration ended because I didn't take it personally.
