I did the same last April; we sat in the very last row and it wasn't too bad (at least in terms of sitting in Y). With the extra leg room to the side I don't think it's worth buying a third seat - it felt almost the same space wise for me.

Got really good at UA Trivia that flight as the questions seem to cycle every few hours or so..
