Yeah this is correct. If you see A seats on each of the sectors they don't always marry up in A despite the stopovers. Unfortunately I have also not found a way to work out how to get around this apart from dedicating time to trying lots of potentials. There generally does seem to be some benefit of choosing days with A5 over say A2 when booking for 2 people (days with higher availability have better chance of giving an A fare although this is not a rule and doesn't always work). I think the main thing you need is understanding of the above and also plenty of time to keep trying various potentials.
