Things like that actually do have handles, although you can't see them in the photo. Look at the middle third of the side towards the bottom left of that image. See the straight part? I'm sure there's a way to put your fingers under the lip and lift it--I've never seen a crate like that that doesn't have a lip for lifting. It requires two hands but they're meant to be picked up, you don't have to hug them.

Still, though, bad idea for checked luggage!
I check large boxes on a regular basis. Beats paying FedEx.

But, even if he does have to change planes on the to Spain from England, I would still check them without hesitation myself. And, if they are delayed, he'll get free home delivery a few days later.

Regarding tape v straps, I prefer the former. I haven't a box or storage crate tampered with in years.
