If I were doing it I would strap them in preference to taping them. I wouldn't trust security to put the straps back correctly, though.

I'd look around for cheap suitcases, maybe from a charity shop, that you can use once and donate. Airlines understand suitcases, their systems are set up to handle suitcases. I doubt they can handle plastic tubs without damaging them, especially as they don't appear to have handles and would require staff to put their arms around the crates and lift them.
Things like that actually do have handles, although you can't see them in the photo. Look at the middle third of the side towards the bottom left of that image. See the straight part? I'm sure there's a way to put your fingers under the lip and lift it--I've never seen a crate like that that doesn't have a lip for lifting. It requires two hands but they're meant to be picked up, you don't have to hug them.

Still, though, bad idea for checked luggage!
