I think it would be moreso an indication that while individually the gesture is substantial, in the grand scheme of the MP program it is a relatively small amount of the overall outstanding milage balance. It's really easy to forget just how massive UA (or any of the airlines really are). Just some rough numbers, if this were to be claimed by 500k passengers (based on SK reporting the weekend alone affected 150k passengers, extrapolated out to the remaining 4 days of disruption beyond that), that would be equivalent to only 1-2 days worth of travelers that UA sees. And then when you consider the amount, the majority of this is going to be used against seats that would otherwise spoil anyways (saver awards, upgrades), it wouldn't be hard to see how this has minimal impact on the earnings. The refunds they have to issue for cancelled itineraries/unused tickets are probably a more substantial impact to earnings than the compesnation gesture.

I believe the criteria they're using for overnight in this case is 8+ hours with a change in departure day.
