It's not going to be especially pleasant walking in that area around 10 pm but the risks of violent crime are still relatively low.

I'll add that I find the two extreme narratives - San Francisco as a crime-ridden cesspool vs. that story being a total media-driven falsehood - to be equally inaccurate. The fact is that SF has become increasingly lawless and the area around Market Street and Union Square is particularly troubled. But it's not truly dangerous in the sense we typically apply that concept to certain areas of certain cities.
