ORD doesn't do digital boarding passes at the gate anyway, it's their way of ensuring the passport scan and has been like so for many years.
Three hours meal service for the USA-UK direction is way too long, it would be on the long side for UK to USA too, but that's less problematic (and preferred by some passengers). But that is the area where experience in the CW meal service really does count, if they keep the same crews on the ORD services then they will get the hang of that - it's a common complaint we see just after any change in the CW space, be it menu structure or aircraft.
I do feel for those who only found out about this at the gate. If they had booked via AA, for example, I'm not sure it would have been obvious what was going on.
