I believe you can also call up and pay for seating when un-ticketed, even for most TA bookings (not group bookings though).
Sorry but if its pre paid seating you are looking at, its only possible once ticketed.
However its possible to do free seating on un-ticketed bookings ie if you are Silver or Gold.
