I find this disconnect more often with driving times particularly among people who live in small countries. Friends from Europe visiting Ottawa asked if they could drive to Winnipeg in a day when it's two days at least. Meanwhile, friends in the UK were astonished when we drove from Edinburgh to London and didn't consider it that big of a deal.
I have seen the same situation with European friends. They don't quite understand how big US and Canada are.
Three weeks ago I drove from Reno to Idaho Falls. It was about 9h drive time between two US states, 650 miles (or more than 1000km). Put the same in EU context and it is the same as driving from Budapest to Strasbourg - crossing four countries.
